STATE BOARD GETS ASHE SCHOOL PLANS ★★★ ★★★ ★ ★ ★ * ★ ★ ******* Cancer Control Fund Drive Will Open On Monday Mrs. Wright And Mrs. Porter Are (bounty Chairmen Funds Will Help In Research, Treatment, Maintenance Of Detection Centers The annual drive for funds for the control of cancer will open on Monday in Ashe county with Mrs. P. G. Wright and Mrs. J. Bruce Porter as joint chairmen. At this time a concentrated drive will be made to raise the county's quota. Personal solicita tion will be made, where it is 'V possible and those who are not ► called on are asked to mail in or io give their contributions to either Mrs. Porter or Mrs. Wright. Funds raised will be used to fight cancer on a local, state and national level. Research will be canned on. detection clinics held and treatment given where ne cess arv. The detection center clinic for this ee untv is held at Wilkesboro each Tuesday, where anyone over 35 years of age may get an ex am:na::on free of charge. "The ever - increasing deaths from cancer among both the old and young make it necessary to fight this dreaded disiase in ev ery way possible.” a drive offi cial said. Attention is called to the fact that mere than 25 people in Ashe county alone died from cancer last year. Thomas Sears Is Moved To Raleigh Has Served As County Super visor Of FHA Since 1910; Will Be Appraiser Thomas Sears, who has served as the county supervisor for the Federal Home Administration in Ashe county since February, 1940, this week was transferretd to dis trict three of the FHA, with of fices in Raleigh. Mr. Sears came to Ashe county in 1944) and has served as county supervisor in Ashe county all of this time and has served as su pervisor in Alleghany county off and on for several years. He was transferred to the Ral eigh office where he will do ap p: aisal work on farm loans. Under the new regulations whereby loans can be made un der FHA for construction of homes, more work has to be done by appraisers and Mr. Sears was promoted from county supervisor „ to district appraiser to fill this to vacancy in the Raleigh district. 1 He stated that his family would remain in West Jefferson until school is out in May. W. B. Ferguson who assisted Mr. Sears in Ashe county, has beer, named acting county super visor until another supervisor is named for the county. For Six Officials B. B. Graybeal Is Registrar;^ Book Opened April 1 j For Registration Of interest to citizens of West Jefferson this week is the an-; n ounce men: o-f the municipal election to he held on May 2,! when the mayor and five aider men will be elected. The town board of aldermen this week named B. B. Graybeal as registrar for the election with Joe Hudler and W. D. McMillan appointed to act as judges. The registration book opened on Saturday. April 1, 9:00 a. m., and will cont nue open for regis tration until 5:00 p. m., April 22 at the Ashe Motor Go^ so that, any and all .persons who desire to file claim of intention for can didacy for any of the municipal positions may file such intentions. April 29 has been designated as challenge day so that any per son who wishes to challenge any registration or other item of pro cedure may do so. No announcement has been made thus far of any candidate who will be in the election. Present officials who are now serving the town are Carl B. Graybeal, mayor, and the fol lowing aldermen; John Reeves. Russell Barr, Glenn Graybeal. Last week State Highway Commissioner Dr. Henry Jordar nnd District Commissioner, Marl Gcforth were present at the Ro tary Club and discussed the pro gram briefly, after which there followed a question and'answei period. Chairman Jordan pointed oui how important it was for the ex pansion and development oi North Carolina that the rural roads be improved. “Secondary roads must be improved if the whole State of North Carolina is to be developed,” he said. It was explained that the mach inery at Burnt Hill has been rented and that the State was doing the work. Commissioner Goforth said that on small jobs the State : would do much of the work in , stead of letting it out on con | tract. Sunrise Services And Others Will Fittingly Celebrate Easter Season Ashe county churches will observe Easter in a lilting man ner on Sunday when many spe cial services depicting the resur rection of Christ, have been plan ned. At the West Jefferson Meth odist church Rev. Hoyt Wood will have a service centered around the theme. “You Are Im mortal.” This seryice is the final service of a series that has been held this week on Easter at the church. Easter music will be pre .-.ented by the choir. A communion service will be held at the West Jtffe: son Bap tist church tonight at 1:30 and a special Easter sermon and music will be presented on Sunday morning. Rev. Rexford Campbell stated. Rev. C. C. Murray stated that a special Good Friday would be held at the Jefferson church Fri day night at 7:30 p. m., with Rev. W. A. Kerr conducting the service and special Easter music by the choir. He announced that spscia’.Eas (Continued on page 4) Debate 1 onignt At Rotary Meet The Lansing affirmative debate team will meet the Jefferson negative team in the Jeffersons Rotary Club debate tonight at the community building. Debating for Lansing will be Misses Betty Blevins and Mar ene Jones while Misses Peggy Sue Oliver and Anne Francis will represent Je.tfgrson in the debate on “Resolved that the President of the United States should be elected by the direct vote of the people.” The preliminary debate was held at the Jefferson school Tuesday when these two teams emerged the winners. The delayed Sipring weath has evidently made most people anxious to shed their winter clothing for something new and bright, merchants report. Many gardners are ready to ■ put their seeds in the ground on ; Jood Friday, if the weather per- 1 mits, ss many gardens have al- ’ ready been ploughed. i W i 11 Consider Program Today For Consolidation Members Of County Board Of Education In Raleigh Asking For Action Ashe county’s school building program is expected to be acted upon today by the State Board of Education along with others at the regular meeting. It was pass ed yesterday afternoon by the building committee at a meeting attended by A. B. Hurt, E. C. Francis and Clyde Houck. Due to the fact that the hear ings by a Jefferson group op posing the consolidation was call ed off, the delay is expected to be ended. At a meeting of the county board of education on Monday a resolution was adopted leaving Jefferson out of the proposed consolidation which was original ly scheduled to include Jefferson, West Jefferson, Todd and Fleet wood in a central high school at Beaver Creek. Jefferson was left out by request. And on account of this cancelled the plans for a hearing in Raleigh. S. D. A., from tests conducted at the station. Those in attendance were well pleased with the work as carried on, it was stated.
